We'll share a vintage University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) photo each Thursday on our homepage as part of the popular "Throwback Thursday."
Check back each week for a photo celebrating UNO's history, and to learn more about what's happening on campus and in our community, and future plans for the university.
Visit the UNO Criss Library Flickr photostream for even more photos.
The History of Aksarben
From the Aksarben Village website:
Aksarben (“Nebraska” spelled backwards) was one of Omaha’s most popular destinations throughout the 20th century. Famous for its horseracing track, Aksarben also featured a grandstand, coliseum and other facilities that hosted a variety of entertainment, including concerts, public ice-skating, minor league sports games, world championship rodeos and road shows.
UNO's College of Business Administration & Aksarben
Mammel Hall, home of the UNO College of Business Administration (CBA), is located on the former infield of the Aksarben racetrack. A sign containing information about the area's rich history can be found between Mammel Hall and the University of Nebraska Peter Kiewit Institute (PKI).
UNO & the Omaha Farmers Market
UNO is sponsoring the Omaha Farmers Market in Aksarben Village, located south of UNO's Pacific Campus, through October 18. Stop by each Sunday from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. and see what's in season, or visit the Omaha Farmers Market website.
The Future of Aksarben Village
Expansion
Aksarben Village is set to grow again!
A $82 million project is in the works for the village. The project would provide additional office space, living space, parking garages and retail opportunities.Click here to read about these plans
The UNO/Community Arena
As part of UNO’s mission as a premier metropolitan university, UNO Athletics has been working on a new arena project just south of Aksarben Village, between 64th and 67th streets.
The arena will not only enhance the visibility of the UNO campus, but it will also provide great benefit, both economically and socially, to the Omaha metropolitan area.
