Bachelor of Art in Studio Art - Visual Communications
Shukura is a UNO and Thompson Learning Community Alumni, class of 2012, an Omahan and creative professional who has a passion for community, mentorship, and education. Shukura started her career working with elementary school youth through after-school programming and engagement while completing her undergraduate studies. Continuing in the vein of education and mentorship, Shukura served a term as an Americorps member for a youth art mentorship program upon graduation from the University of Nebraska Omaha. Almost a decade of working with Omaha Public Schools’ middle school students, through after-school mentoring and college-access programming, Shukura has had so many full circle moments of serving youth from one level to the next. Oftentimes reconnecting with and learning from educational professionals that aided her as a student, building community partnerships that enrich and diversify student experiences, and helping students to intentionally build networks that support their goals and aspirations have been most rewarding.
Shukura is extremely passionate about the arts and the role creativity plays in every aspect of life, especially when solving problems and building community and connection. You can typically find Shukura behind a computer screen working on design projects, hopping on a plane, train, or in a car headed toward an adventure, performing/crafting something, enjoying sports and the outdoors, or spending time with family and loved ones. Shukura also spends time actively engaged in her sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated and currently serves as the State Director. Shukura is more than excited to return to the UNO campus and to TLC a decade later to continue helping students understand the uniqueness they bring with them on their college journey while being a part of a community that also understands and values the individual student along this collective experience.
