Scope
This policy applies to all courses offered at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Policy Statement
Because class attendance and course grades are positively related, the University expects students to attend all class sessions of courses in which they are enrolled. Each faculty member has the responsibility to determine specific attendance policies for each course taught. On the first day of class, each faculty member will make available to each student a written statement of the specific attendance policy, if any, for that class including the role that attendance plays in the calculation of final grades.
If a student is absent or anticipates an absence, the student’s primary responsibility is direct to the faculty, and the student should consult with them accordingly. If a student anticipates an absence for an extended period, the student should promptly notify the faculty member. Students may request a medical supervision notification by contacting the Accessibility Services Center.
Faculty are expected to support students should their university-endorsed extracurricular activities conflict with class attendance requirements. It is expected that students provide adequate and reasonable advance notice to faculty in order that they can ensure that the absence will not jeopardize or compromise the pedagogical goals and requirements of the course and students’ learning.
Faculty or other university officials who may require students, individually or collectively, to be absent from their classes due to a university-endorsed extracurricular activity are responsible for providing adequate information to the students involved so they may provide notice to other faculty.
If a student has an accommodation plan issued by Accessibility Services Center for flexibility in attendance related to a disability, the student will need to consult with the faculty member regarding the implementation of the accommodation in association with the class attendance policy.
Students who wish to appeal a grading decision may do so pursuant to the grade appeal procedure provided by each collegial unit (see ‘Related Information’).
