Using Generative AI on Professional Documents

  1. UNO
  2. Career Services

  • Résumé and Cover Letter Resources
  • Online Résumé/Cover Letter Review

You can use generative AI to revise your professional documents like résumés and cover letters as these tools are best at editing and tailoring rather than innovating or creating.

The Career Services team strongly encourages you to create a draft of your résumé first, and then use AI tools, like BigInterview, to provide suggestions to update your résumé.

Once the revised résumé has been created, we also suggest scheduling an in-person appointment with one of our Career Services professionals through Handshake.

General Tip

We don't always know who owns the information fed to AI systems. This information can bias the AI's output. Avoid feeding personal information to AI tools such as your name, contact information, or address.

Also understand that AI tools can hold biases against languages, politics, race, and can even invent inaccurate information. Students should always double-check the finished text to ensure accurate and honest information within their résumés. Lastly, AI text can often be devoid of emotion, tone, or “natural voice.” Be sure to edit when needed and rewrite texts in a tone that reflects your own writing style.

Suggested Steps For Building and Revising Your Résumé with AI

  1. Create a rough draft of your résumé that is tailored to the specific job you are applying for
    • If you haven’t created a résumé before, we suggest using UNO’s Résumé Templates
  2. Have BigInterview read and provide feedback on your uploaded résumé
    • Be sure to provide BigInterview the full job description of the position you’re applying for to get the best feedback possible
  3. Revise as needed
  4. Schedule an in-person résumé review appointment with a member of our Career Services staff through your Handshake account for individualized and focused recommendations
  5. Revise and apply!

Watch this quick video on how to upload your résumé to Big Interview Résumé AI:

Steps for Résumé Revision Through BigInterview

  1. Upload your résumé directly into the AI as well as copy and paste the full job description to which you are applying to
  2. Let the AI know which Scoring Guide you would like to use on your résumé (We suggest selecting the "UNO Career Services Recommended Scoring Guide")
  3. Read the feedback given by the AI and revise as you see fit
  4. Understand that all feedback given is subjective and is not a hard and fast rule. If you don’t want to make a change, you don’t have to!

Steps for Résumé Revision Through Other Generative AI

  1. Copy and paste your résumé directly into the AI as well as the full job description to which you are applying
  2. Ask the AI to optimize your résumé to the job description listed (“Here's my current résumé. How would you rewrite it if you were applying to this job description?")
  3. Run your résumé through the AI after each revision to double-check yourself
  4. Have a Career Services professional review your résumé after you’re done revising it with AI
  5. Make sure you copy and paste your new résumé back into a Word document or PDF before applying to the position(s)

Common Prompts for Generative AI to Revise Your Résumés

When using generative AI for résumé revisions, structuring your prompts with Role, Task/Goal, and Tone can significantly improve the results. Here’s how to format your prompts effectively and some examples to get started:

Prompt Structure

  1. Role: Instruct the AI to take on a specific role or position to provide more targeted feedback.
    • Example: "Imagine you are a professional résumé writer specializing in [industry]."
  2. Task/Goal: Clearly explain what you’d like the AI to accomplish with your résumé.
    • Example: "Revise this résumés [paste your résumé here] to best fit this job description [paste the job description or job title here]."
  3. Tone: Specify the tone or style you’d like the AI to use in its response.
    • Example: "...and ensure the résumé is written in a professional, polished tone."

Example Prompts

Here are some specific prompts using this structure to help guide the AI:

General Resume Improvement

  • Role: "Imagine you are a résumé expert specializing in entry-level job applications."
  • Task/Goal: "Revise my résumé [paste your résumé here] to be more concise and action-oriented."
  • Tone: "...and ensure it reads professionally and clearly."

Tailoring for a Job

  • Role: "You are a career advisor familiar with the [specific field, e.g., healthcare]."
  • Task/Goal: "Adapt my résumé [paste your résumé here] to highlight the skills and qualifications relevant to this job posting [paste job description here]."
  • Tone: "...while making the tone confident and professional."

Keyword Optimization

  • Role: "You are an applicant tracking system (ATS) specialist."
  • Task/Goal: "Add relevant keywords from this job description [paste job description here] into my resume [paste your résumé here] to improve its ATS ranking."
  • Tone: "...ensuring it remains natural and easy to read."

Feedback and Analysis
