Exploring does NOT mean you are lost. In fact, Exploratory Studies students have already made a very important decision—to attend UNO. The Exploratory Studies concentration supports students up until their first 45 hours with courses that are designed to help students get acquainted with UNO and the programs it offers, as well as purposeful advising with the Maverick Advising Center (MAC).
Not sure what you want to study?
Like many UNO students, Exploratory Studies students (Explorers) haven’t quite decided on a major yet OR they need a bit more time to make sure their plans for a major are a best-fit.
Exploratory Studies students benefit from the unique opportunity to explore various options for a major while still fulfilling their general education credits, so they don’t waste time or money.
They are also offered advising services, academic support, and specific programs geared to help them make effective decisions about their academic goals and aspirations so they can graduate on time.
Exploratory Studies is meant as an immediate but temporary academic home. Students cannot graduate with a major in the Exploratory Studies Concentration.
Students move into the college and major of their choice at or before 45 hours of coursework.
You will be assigned an academic advisor who works with you to explore your options. These unique and specially trained group of academic advisors will guide you through academic focus areas to an academic major you love, all while you stay on pace for graduation.
What's unique about Exploratory Studies?
Exploratory Studies students can feel assured that they are supported as they define their personal and academic goals.
They are offered Exploratory Studies 1000 (EXPL 1000), a general education course specifically designed to explore majors and minors at UNO as well help students better define their passions, talents, and interests by studying challenging issues from interdisciplinary perspectives.
Exploratory Studies also connects students to the best UNO faculty, smaller general educations classes selected for Exploratory Studies students’ unique needs, faculty and peer mentoring, and one-on-one academic advising with a MAC advisor.
In short, Exploratory Studies ensures that students pick a major they love so that they graduate on time and begin their professional life with the skills and knowledge needed for success.
