“We cannot eliminate evil, but we can stop it from taking hold and destroying our collective humanity." - Sam Fried, Holocaust survivor
The Sam and Frances Fried Holocaust and Genocide Academy promotes and facilitates the scholarly study of the Holocaust and other genocides and provides students, faculty and community members the tools to assist in the prevention of crimes against humanity.
We support University of Nebraska Omaha community engagement and commemorative activities, along with supporting student and faculty research that raises awareness of Holocaust and genocide history. We are dedicated to fostering and promoting greater collaboration between UNO and local community organizations.
The Fried Academy is dedicated to creating a permanent institutional presence at UNO. Accordingly, events relating to the Holocaust and others genocides will take place on a regular basis with invited lecturers from the university and community, as well as outside scholars and experts. We also strive to support emerging scholars in the field of Holocaust and Genocide Studies.
Lastly, the Sam and Frances Fried Holocaust and Genocide Academy is proud to have helped establish and grow UNO’s Holocaust and Genocide Studies Minor, the first of its kind in the Midwest. This comprehensive program of study is designed to help students understand the causes of genocide, to draw lessons from the past and to assist them in becoming responsible global citizens.
