Which classes satisfy the Quantitative Literacy General Education Requirement?
MATH 1120: Introduction to Mathematical and Computational Thinking
In this class students will explore mathematical concepts by learning to program a computer to make visual art. As the name implies, the focus is on thinking, not manual calculations or memorization. A common thread throughout the course is the analysis of patterns from both mathematical and computational viewpoints. Creativity is highly encouraged!
Any student may enroll in MATH 1120.
MATH 1130: Quantitative Literacy
This course is designed to equip students with the mathematical, statistical, and computational skills necessary to explore real-life situations. Students will work with data to determine correlations and make sound predictions. Students will demonstrate critical-thinking and problem-solving skills while studying voting systems including US primaries and the Electoral College. Students will discover methods for making responsible financial decisions including student, car and home loans, investing with linear and geometric growth. This class will also contain mathematical-based discussions of current events.
Any student may enroll in MATH 1130.
MATH 1300: College Algebra with Support OR MATH 1320: Algebra for Pre-Calculus
These are college algebra courses that explores families of functions and their properties. Function families covered include: linear, polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic. These courses should be taken by students who need college algebra as part of their program, need college algebra as a prerequisite for another course, or prefer to satisfy the general education quantitative literacy requirement with an algebra course. MATH 1300 is designed to provide additional support for students by moving at a slower pace and reviewing prerequisite knowledge in advance of covering the main course content.
Students must place into MATH 1320 via ACT, SAT, or ALEKS score.
Any student may enroll in MATH 1300.
STAT/MATH 1100: Data Literacy and Visualization
In this course students will gain a basic understanding of how to interpret data and the stories it tells. By combining mathematical computations and visualization techniques students will analyze real-world data, determine areas for improvement, and data relationships. Students will study proper use of color, appropriate chart or graph selection, and interactive dashboard design. Upon completion of the class students will be able to create informative visualizations, make statistical predictions and justify conclusions based on the data analysis. This class includes a service learning component in which students will work in groups with a local non-profit organization to help them make sense of their data.
Any student may enroll in STAT 1100.
STAT 1530: Elementary Statistics
In this course students will explore interesting data sets such as those involving biometric security, cybersecurity, drones, and smartphone data speeds. The course incorporates the use of relevant statistical software. Students will explore and compare data with tables and graphs, learn the basic concepts of probability, probability distributions, and hypothesis testing, and will be introduced to concepts such as correlation and regression. This course is required for students who major in Geography, students who major in Biology and choose the Education concentration, and students who major in Education and choose the Biology or Science endorsements.
Students must place into STAT 1530 via ACT, SAT, or ALEKS score, or take the prerequisite course MATH 1210.
Can I "test out" of the Quantitative Literacy General Education requirement?
Students can place out of the Quantitative Literacy General Education requirement with an ACT Math Sub-Score of 23 or higher, an SAT Math Sub-Score of 540 or higher, or an SAT2016 Math Sub-Score of 570 or higher.
Students cannot place out of this requirement via the UNO Math Placement exam. However, they can place into MATH 1320 or a higher course. Completion of MATH 1320 or a higher course with a grade of C- or higher will demonstrate proficiency in Quantitative Literacy and fulfill the Gen Ed requirement.
Students who fulfill their Quantitative Literacy Gen Ed either via SAT/ACT scores or completion of MATH 1320 or higher may be required to complete more Math courses for their Major. Check the UNO Catalog or contact your Academic Advisor for details.
ACT scores, SAT scores, ALEKS scores, and courses are only valid as prerequisites for two years.
