Shelby Dechow, a biotechnology and foreign languages major, was awarded the Dean's Award for 2016. Dechow has collected an impressive list of academic honors in her time at UNO including being on the Chancellor's list four times and receiving the University Honors Program Student Achievement Award.
One nominator calls her "a spirited and committeed Maverick" for her many campus acitivities including her years as a drum major and chemistry and biology tutor in the Math-Science Learning Center.
Dechow has applied for a Fulbright research grant to work in the laboratory of Dr. Berhard Hube, Professor of Microbial Pathogenicity at Friedrich Schiller University Jena and Head of the Department of Microbial Pathogenicity Mechanisms at the Leibniz Institute. Dr. Gwyneth Cliver, Professor of German, writes, " Although I have no expertise with which to judge her scientific abilities, familiarity with German culture and the country's university system lets me know that the offer by Dr. Hube for Ms. Dechow to be a fully integrated member of his lab is a unique and prestigious opportunity that demonstrates how highly qualified she is in the field of biotechnology."
