Calihan Price began her undergraduate career at UNL where she hoped to major in hospitality. When she transferred to UNO, she took a food writing class with English Professor Dr. Lisa Knopp and “was hooked” on English, “especially creative non-fiction,” which is one of the English major’s four concentrations.
Originally from Fremont, Calihan said her parents have always been supportive of whatever she wanted to study in college. However, she feels that English is an important area of study for her. As Calihan says, “writing is all around us,” and adds that there’s a need for good writing and good communication skills in any field. She hopes to build on these skills by getting an internship.
If Calihan had a piece of advice to freshman, it would be to not be so hard on themselves. “Perfection is not the end goal.” Perfection and excellence, Calihan has learned, are not synonymous. That lesson has taken her a while to learn. Calihan has also learned how to balance the demands of school and work; last spring she worked 20 hours a week as a nanny to three toddlers and their three-year-old sister, something that might be a little easier to do this fall since taking mostly online courses.
