Alecia Anderson, Ph.D., an associate professor of sociology and anthropology, and Ramón Guerra, Ph.D., an associate professor of English who also works closely with the Office of Latino and Latin American Studies (OLLAS), were named Faculty Fellows for the College of Arts and Sciences to focus on efforts related to Diversity, Equity, Access and Inclusion (DEAI).
“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Anderson and Dr. Guerra taking the lead for the College of Arts and Sciences in this critically important new initiative,” says David Boocker, Dean of the UNO College of Arts and Sciences. “The work they are doing now will no doubt lead to not only greater awareness but also to the development and deployment of initiatives that contribute to the achievement of diversity and inclusion related goals for our College.”
The Fellowship begins in January of 2021, and the term lasts for two years. Anderson and Guerra will create new initiatives and build on existing efforts in the College, but also advance, implement and execute, with colleagues and offices across campus, various components of the University’s DEAI plans.
“I’m most looking forward to working with college faculty, staff, and students over the next two years to identify our strengths as well as our weaknesses in addressing issues of diversity, equity, access, and inclusion and create real, distinguishable outcomes that have a lasting effect and continue to challenge complacency,” Guerra says. “I am excited about the opportunity to advance the collective awareness of the need to continually engage with these issues and not ignore their importance in our community’s success.”
Anderson echoes those sentiments.
“These next two years, I am most looking forward to setting up a sustained DEAI program to help make substantive strides toward diversity, equity, and inclusion in our college,” Anderson says. “I took on the role of Faculty Fellow because it is important to develop an atmosphere and a culture that values diverse people, diverse ideas and a college that is dedicated to the success of diverse and marginalized groups.”
