What our students are saying
Why our students chose UNO. . .
Avy Zheng | Alumna
"After speaking to the professors and doing research about this program, I chose to attend UNO because I was confident that the professors were going to give me the best education and practical skills necessary to become a successful school psychologist. I really appreciate that all the professors were once practicing school psychologists because it gives them the ability to provide us with valuable advice based on their previous experiences. The climate at our program has been nothing but welcoming and our fellow students and staff are so supportive! I've been loving my experience here thus far!"
Jaedyn Morrison | Intern
"I wanted to be able to spend more time in a program that focuses less on emphasis of research and more on helping the children that would be in front of me, and I thought this program would be an amazing fit. Our program's professors are also amazing, so that played a part!"
Veronica Abbott | Alumna
"I chose UNO because of the professors and their passion for the field of school psychology. Their investment in the program was very evident which made me want to be a part of it. I am certain that UNO is where I am supposed to be!"
Current Student Experiences
Brittany Sullivan | Anderson Grove Elementary | 2nd Year Practicum Experience
This year, I have been supporting different kinds of data collection and progress monitoring. Last semester, I focused on literacy skills such as phonemic awareness and phonics. This semester, I have continued assisting with data, but now I support students' math skills through individual and small group interventions. I have loved being at Anderson Grove - they truly make me feel like a part of the family and I'm learning so much by being able to practice my skills in a hands-on way.
Micah Levine | Hillside Elementary | 2nd Year Practicum Experience
My time is spent providing reading and math interventions. I specifically have one small math group and two small reading groups. I find it most rewarding to witness the day-to-day progress students achieve. They are quick to show their excitement and joy when something clicks, which is very fulfilling to see. Lastly, I get to work and build connections with some pretty phenomenal staff members.
Maria Juarez | Sandoz Elementary | 2nd Year Practicum Experience
I've appreciated all the knowledge I've gained thus far from my amazing supervisor at Sandoz Elementary. The majority of my work during the first semester was spent observing various interdisciplinary team meetings, helping kindergarteners develop their core reading abilities, and running a small reading intervention group for first graders. Recently, I've started working one-on-one with three first graders to increase their fact fluency as well as providing additional support in two small groups for writing and math. Overall, getting to know students and learning valuable information about how I can support teachers more effectively in the future have been my favorite parts of the experience.
Brianna Stockton | Dundee Elementary in OPS | 3rd Year Practicum Experience
Thus far, I've had the opportunity to be involved in providing both home and school based services. Some of these inc and visiting families' homes for early development evaluations an implementing a academic and social skills interventions at Dundee. I have loved learning about and participating in the wide variety of activities my supervisor is involved in and working with children from a variety of age groups. My favorite part of practicum has been building relationships with the kids, families, and staff I work with.
Garret Roberts | 3rd Year Practicum Experience
While in practicum, I've had the opportunity o assist with the evaluation process y conducting observations, reviewing records, and taking part in test administration. Attending staff meetings, MDTs, and IEPs has also been a valuable learning opportunity. I've also enjoyed getting to work directly with students as a part of an organized group that I am carrying out.
Meghan Rivera| Plattsmouth Community Schools | 3rd Year Practicum Experience
I have been learning a lot about how the Plattsmouth Community School District create behavior plans, and have been able to use a lot of the information I have learned from my classes at UNO. My favorite thing I've gotten to do so far is be a part of the anime club, I've gotten to know a bunch of really cool high schoolers this way and have seen how you can teach social skills and friendship making skills in a more natural way by brining students together around a common interest.
From Our Past Graduates: How UNO Prepared Them to Become School Psychologists
Lauren Bennewitz | Alumna
“I am beyond grateful for my four years at UNO's school psychology program. UNO prepared me to work in any educational setting in any state. The professors instilled in me the importance of data-based decision making, looking at the whole child, an understanding of multi-tiered systems of support and the problem-solving process. UNO also taught my classmates and myself to advocate for ourselves and show our districts and agencies that our skill sets go well beyond testing for special education placement. If I could go back, I'd pick UNO over again and again!”
Stephanie Hengen | Alumna
“I was very fortunate to attend the School Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Omaha program. The combination of lectures, hands-on experiences in neighboring school districts, independent reading and class discussions, open-door policies of the professors, and an emphasis on community and collaboration within the program and local school psychologists was the exact approach I needed to prepare me for internship and beyond. As I reflect on graduate school, I look back on the program and professors with complete adoration and respect.”
