About the Contest
This first annual writing contest is hosted by the UNO Writing Center, where we work with the UNO and UNMC writing community to improve writing abilities, think critically, read productively, and communicate effectively.
The UNO Writing Center is not just a place; it is people: writers talking with writers about writing.
Contest Theme
What it means to be a Maverick (This is open to your own creative interpretation.)
Winners will receive: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each of the three categories will get a certificate, UNO Writing Center Swag, and digital publication on the UNO Writing Center's website.
Contest Directions & Rules
How to submit:
- Submissions can be emailed to unowritingcenter@unomaha.edu as a PDF file.
- Please remove name and any identifying information from the body of the document and file name (judging is blind).
- Include the subject line: Writing Contest Submission.
What to include in the email:
- Your name and the Nebraska city in which you live in
- The category that you are submitting to (fiction, creative non-fiction, or poetry) and word count
- Your attached PDF file
Submission dates:
- Contest begins at 12:01 A.M. EST on March 13, 2023.
- Contest closes at 11:59 P.M. EST on April 10, 2023.
- Winners will be announced on May 5, 2023.
Other submission details:
- Must be living in Nebraska to submit (enrolled Nebraska university students in other states may also apply).
- Submission must be your original work and not previously published.
- Author retains the copyright to their submitted work.
- One (1) submission is allowed per person, per category.
- No AI generated or assisted submissions, please (original work should be your own).
Judging: All eligible entries will be judged by the Staff Community Outreach Team at the UNO Writing Center.
Selection Criteria: Creativity, the quality of writing, organization structure and word flow, character or overall meaning
Is there a fee? There is no fee to participate. This contest is free to enter!
