Research Interests
Dr. Miles' areas of expertise include strategic management and entrepreneurship, with a specific interest in how institutional or environmental factors influence firm strategy. Working in the financial and banking industry, she experienced first-hand how the external environments influenced trade activity and fund strategy, which motivated her to seek further understanding of these relationships. Her research focuses on how economic environment conditions and community relationships influence firm decisions and strategy. Dr. Miles also studies technology and innovation management and considers how external relationships influence innovation patterns and outcomes. Her work has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Management, Research Policy, Journal of International Management Reviews, and Asia Pacific Management Journal, as well as the Academy of Management Conference proceedings.
Service Summary
Dr. Miles is the director and one of the founders of the innovative and award-winning Capstone Cup. In directing this program, she works with local companies to develop a case briefing for students each semester, recruits employers to evaluate student presentations, and is responsible for sponsorship relations. Professor Miles was part of a team that spearheaded the Jack & Stephanie Koraleski Commerce and Applied Behavioral (CAB) Laboratory in the College of Business. She is also part of the Business Strategy team for the National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology, and Education Center (NCITE) housed at UNO and is the co-PI on a workforce development grant that familiarizes business students with various agencies within the Department of Homeland Security. Dr. Miles is currently on the UNO Faculty Senate, is chairing a standing committee, and is part of the core executive council. Dr. Miles serves on the University DEAI Faculty Advisory Committee and is part of the University Faculty Search Training team. She serves as the Assistant Department Chair, the Management Advisory Board Lead, and is the faculty sponsor for the Delta Sigma Pi fraternity and advisor for the Students in Leadership And Management (SLAM) student organization. She is a member of the Academy of Management and the North American Case Research Association, and she has served as a reviewer for prestigious academic management conferences and journals.
