CAB Lab Research Study Procedure
1. Initial Consultation
The first step is to schedule an initial consultation with the CAB Lab director to see the suitability of the lab’s biometric sensors to the desired research. The initial consultation is scheduled via email at muntahabanihani@unomaha.edu, where the research idea can be sent for review and a time can be set to meet with the director.
2. iMotions Training
It is recommended that the Principal Investigator(s) are familiar with iMotions functionality and software. The Principal Investigator(s) should undergo iMotions training prior to attempting to design studies in iMotions. If the Principal Investigator(s) are new to the software, video and training materials can be provided.
3. Study Process Demonstration
In addition to iMotions training, the Principal Investigator(s) should review the lab’s study process through a demonstration. This will enable the Principal Investigator(s) to understand how the study will be conducted with participants such as the consent process, granting credit for participants, set up of study, among other research-related tasks.
4. CITI Training Certification (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative)
Principal Investigator(s) must complete research, ethics, compliance and safety training through CITI. This is required for the researcher to conduct studies by the International Review Board (IRB).
5. Design Study in iMotions
With a basic understanding of iMotions, the Principal Investigator(s) can begin to design their study in iMotions. The Principal Investigator(s) must come to the lab to set up their study in the software via appointment. Proctors and Graduate Assistants will be available to assist in study design and set up in iMotions.
6. IRB Submission
Principal Investigator(s) must submit their research proposal to the International Review Boad to run their studies in the CAB Lab. The Principal Investigator(s) must ensure their IRB submission contains the correct elements necessary for review, and we suggest the addition of all CAB Lab personnel to the application. The Principal Investigator(s) should contact the lab director to complete this step.
a) If the study is conditionally approved by the IRB:
- The lab personnel may run the study in the lab as a pilot study to begin collecting data. The Principal Investigator(s) must be mindful that the conditionally approved data collected during the IRB’s review phase cannot be utilized in the final analysis and should be discarded once fully approved data collection begins.
- The CAB Lab recommends utilizing this data collection period to ensure the results of the study are what the Principal Investigator(s) expects. This period also helps ensure the study's smooth running.
- It is the Principal Investigator(s) responsibility to ensure the fully approved data being collected will be adequate for analysis and sufficiently answers the research question. The CAB Lab personnel will not periodically review the data for the Principal Investigator(s).
7. Review Study Book
The CAB Lab utilizes notebooks for each of the studies the lab runs. These notebooks outline procedures for the research assistants to proctor studies. The CAB Lab recommends the Principal Investigator(s) to review their study’s notebook from a template so the lab can ensure that the specific processes outlined for the study are followed.
8. Submit Research Intake Form
The Principal Investigator(s) must complete the Koraleski CAB Lab intake form to ensure the lab understands the research project, can coordinate duration of the study, post the study on the SONA system, and assist with specific details of the study.
9. Course Participation
The CAB Lab recommends the Principal Investigator(s) to allow the addition of their classes to the SONA system. This will ensure the lab has a larger pool of students attending the lab as participants and taking their study.
10. Data Analysis
The Principal Investigator(s) will have access to an available office space with an iMotions license that can be utilized for data retrieval. The Principal Investigator(s) are responsible for their own data analysis process and data retrieval.
11. Post-Study Follow-up
The Principal Investigator(s) are expected to submit a short summary about their research findings upon completion of data analysis to an academic journal. If the Principal Investigator(s) publishes the research findings in an academic journal, the CAB Lab expects a copy of the research paper as well.
