The answer is complicated, but there are government regulations to guide the decision-making process.
Most UNO business internships are typically ‘paid’, and to attract the best students to your opportunity, we strongly recommend that the position pay $10 or more per hour. Some students are willing to do an unpaid internship, but only when the experience or opportunities provided are truly exceptional. Unless an employer can meet the DOL criteria for using unpaid interns, CBA’s advisors will not recommend such opportunities to our students.
The Department of Labor has developed specific guidelines on the use of unpaid interns. In many cases this practice is prohibited and therefore any employer considering the use of unpaid interns is advised to refer to the Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division’s Fact Sheet #71.
The State of Nebraska has recognized the value of internship experience for students and has implemented a program to assist employers in offsetting some of the costs of hiring interns. While the funds are directed at targets industries, the breadth of industries is quite expansive. You are encouraged to visit the Nebraska Department of Economic Development - InterNE and InternNE Internship Grants to determine if your business might be eligible for some financial assistance in the payment of interns.
