Ellie and Herb Sklenar - Inducted in 2005
Herb Sklenar was born and grew up in Omaha. He received a BSBA with honors from UNO, an MBA from Harvard University; he went on to serve two years in the U.S. Army. Sklenar held executive positions in several corporations before joining Vulcan Materials Company in 1972 as Vice President, Finance.
He became president and CEO of Vulcan in 1986 and was elected chairman and CEO in 1992. Upon his retirement in 1997, he was elected chairman of the board emeritus. He also served as a director of three other public corporations. The UNO graduate is a member of the Board of Distinguished Advisors of The American Committees on Foreign Relations and is a trustee/director of Birmingham-Southern College and Leadership Alabama.
He chaired the initial capital campaign for the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and was inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor in 1997.
In 2005, Sklenar and his wife, Ellie, established a fund to provide full-ride scholarships for CBA undergraduate students.
