Major Thomas Spencer and Beverly Ward Spencer - Inducted in 1998
Major Thomas Spencer, a native Californian, and Beverly Ward, a Kansas native, were both members of the United States Army where they met during tours of duty in Spain.
Married in 1966, they were assigned to Omaha, where Major Spencer enrolled in the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Bootstrapper program in 1971. Major Spencer graduated with a degree in Business in 1971. Beverly Ward Spencer also enrolled in UNOmaha, where she earned a General Studies degree in Accounting in 1972, compiling a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She also was a member of Beta Alpha Psi accounting honorary society.
Following their graduation from UNOmaha, the Spencers moved to Germany before returning to the United States. Mrs. Spencer held numerous government positions related to accounting and obtained her CPA license while residing in Texas. Major Spencer held several commands and received numerous military decorations, including the Silver Star, Bronze Star of Valor, Meritorious Service Metal, prior to his retirement from the Army in 1976.
Following his retirement Major and Mrs. Spencer established a small finance and management consulting firm until Mrs. Spencer's untimely and tragic death in an accident in 1983.
A scholarship, bearing Mrs. Spencer's name, was established by Major Spencer in appreciation for the support provided by the university to the Bootstrapper program and to encourage excellence among young accounting students.
