The University of Nebraska at Omaha College of Business Administration Scholars Academy is a close-knit community of ambitious, high-achieving business students who want to challenge themselves while pursuing a degree.
Throughout the four years in the program, Scholars are mentored by business professionals in the Omaha community, enroll in special business courses taught by award-winning faculty, and gain real-world experience through community engagement and international travel.
Scholars are selected the spring of their senior year of high school after a rigorous and competitive application process.
Meet Victoria Eremeeva, of Omaha, Nebraska, a member of the 2016 Cohort.
Why did you choose UNO?
There’s always a bit of uncertainty that comes along with every big decision, but after touring UNO I knew without a doubt that this is where I wanted to further my education. After doing more research and talking to a few students during the tour, I fell in love with UNO's business approach and course structure. Not only is UNO renowned for its incredible education, but it also offers many opportunities in terms of networking, internships, and volunteer programs. The class size is ideal for my learning needs and the professors are extremely personable and intelligent.
Why did you choose business as a major?
As a junior, I took a marketing class and joined the DECA program. I can honestly say this is what sparked my interest in business and influenced me to also sign up for multiple business courses my senior year. Throughout those classes, I realized that not only was I doing well in those courses, but I also enjoyed learning about new business concepts, and I started implementing them in my life. I truly believe a business major is the best fit for my interests and skills.
What business concentration are you planning to pursue? Why?
I have always been interested in the “people side” of business and have a strong desire to lead and create. That is why I plan to pursue a business management concentration. In the past few years I have focused my academic studies in different areas of business by taking a variety of courses, such as marketing, finance, and economics. Taking these courses has given me the opportunity to explore different aspects of business and narrow down my career interest. In my career, I want a managerial position where I have the chance to emerge as a leader, and that is why I think a concentration in business management will be a perfect fit for me.
What aspect of the Scholars Academy are you most looking forward to?
I love learning about different countries and cultures, so without a doubt I am most looking forward to the study abroad opportunity I will get through the Scholars Academy. I love that we will all be studying there together, which makes traveling to a different country a lot less intimidating. This will definitely be an unforgettable experience for the whole group. I am looking forward to meeting all the other members of the Academy and creating new friendships.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I am guilty of spending most of my free time at the gym. Exercise is the ultimate stress reliever for me and brings balance to my life. I use the time at the gym to think, release emotion, and relax. In my free time I also love spending time with my family, although the only way I get to see them is through a web camera. My mom and I moved to the U.S. eight years ago, and the rest of my family still lives in Russia. I try to Skype them as often as possible, even though the time difference makes it hard. I also try to spend as much time as I can with my friends before everyone leaves next fall. It's really exciting discussing college plans and talking about the future!
What is one thing we would be surprised to know about you?
Because I love to workout, people often think I play sports. The truth is, I've never really cared about sports and refused to play or watch them. Throughout my childhood I was more interested in artistic things. I went to an art school and took ballet lessons. I was in multiple ballet productions for Ballet Nebraska and was a member of its pre-professional company.
