The University of Nebraska at Omaha College of Business Administration Scholars Academy is a close-knit community of ambitious, high-achieving business students who want to challenge themselves while pursuing a degree.
Throughout the four years in the program, Scholars are mentored by business professionals in the Omaha community, enroll in special business courses taught by award-winning faculty, and gain real-world experience through community engagement and international travel.
Scholars are selected the spring of their senior year of high school after a rigorous and competitive application process.
Meet Zach Tabor, of Walton, Nebraska, a member of the 2016 Cohort.
Why did you choose UNO?
I chose UNO because, one, Nebraska is the greatest state in the whole country, and, two, I knew I would be able to find a lot of opportunities that will help me with my future. Some people ignore UNO because of its size, but I actually think that UNO is the perfect-sized college for me. Also, I looked into and visited UNO first, and I fell in love with it right away and knew that it was the college for me.
Why did you choose business as a major?
It was hard for me in high school to figure out what I wanted to do as a career. I never put a whole lot of thought into it, but when I started to take business classes at my school, I knew that business was what I wanted to pursue. I have been taking more business classes so I can decide what I want to do specifically now.
What business concentration are you planning to pursue? Why?
I'm most interested in international business, and I will probably focus on marketing, as well. I took an intro to business class via Southeast Community College, and the section about international business seemed to interest me the most. I enjoy learning about other cultures and even speaking Spanish, so I would like to use those skills when I am out of college. I'm not 100% sure if that's what I will end up majoring in, but it is what I would like to do as of now.
What aspect of the Scholars Academy are you most looking forward to?
I'm looking forward to all of the opportunities I'm going to get, like traveling to another country and creating a project with my peers. I am also really looking forward to making new connections with all of the other students in the Scholars Academy.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love to play drums in my free time; it's something that I can keep improving and can create my own music. If the weather is nice and I have someone else to join, I also like to play tennis in my free time.
What is one thing we would be surprised to know about you?
One thing people would be surprised to know about me is that I'm not actually stupid; it's just my awkward sense of humor...so don't be fooled.
