OMAHA – When Ranjina Rai learned that Yahoo was hosting an open house to help fill internship positions, she turned to faculty and staff at the UNO College of Business Administration to help her prepare.
The Nepal native says she received interview pointers from her managerial communications instructor, Angelika Walker, and Bianca Harley, career development coordinator at the Career Center at CBA.
Rai must have aced the interview. She was hired as a full-time accounting and reporting intern this summer — a role that’s giving her valuable experience and an opportunity to work with a mentor.
Graduating in December 2017, Rai shares more about the Yahoo culture and her accounting aspirations.
What are your job duties?
I assist with running reports in Oracle and work with my mentor to explain the changes in the prepaid account at the end of the month. I also work on projects assigned by my manager. So far, I have helped create process documents that guide users to complete different accounting tasks done by my team.
What do you enjoy about your job?
Yahoo has an awesome work environment. The staff members are always ready to help you and teach you. Working with and among them helps me gain valuable knowledge and skills.
How does your job relate to your coursework in CBA?
Accounting is my concentration, so I use and apply my knowledge that I acquired through my accounting class at UNO in this internship.
What are your career goals? How is CBA helping you achieve them?
I would like to do another internship in a public accounting firm to gain more experience. As a student in CBA with an accounting concentration, I was able to join Beta Alpha Psi (BAP). Through BAP, I have the opportunity to meet representatives from different firms and look for other internship and job opportunities.
What are you doing for fun this summer?
I am planning to visit Yellowstone National Park this summer.
