OMAHA – Alexis d’Amato has spent her summer exploring the East Coast.
Adventurous at heart, d’Amato decided to accept an internship more than 1,000 miles away from Omaha — fitting for someone who grew up in five different states. She works 20 hours each week as a marketing and communications intern at Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Starting her junior year at the UNO College of Business Administration this fall, d’Amato shares more about her internship experience and how CBA has prepared her to excel.
What are your job duties?
I do a little bit of everything. Some of my duties include creating fliers for hospital events, writing articles for the hospital's magazine and emailing hospital employees about participating in various marketing campaigns.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I really enjoy writing fliers and articles. I write the text and then work with the graphic designer to create the perfect layout. It is really exciting to see them around the hospital. I also write feature articles and 100-word health perspectives for the hospital's magazine. It is fulfilling to know my articles will be published in the fall.
How does your job relate to your coursework in CBA?
The majority of my job requires strong communication and networking skills as well as organization and attention to detail. These qualities have been obtained and sharpened through my coursework in CBA, and it is rewarding to know my hard work in CBA is helping me in my internship.
What are your career goals? How is CBA helping you achieve them?
I do not have a clear goal for my future, but I hope to one day be in the marketing department of a big company. CBA offers a lot of networking opportunities and employs great professors who care about their students’ future careers. I know that with the skills and knowledge CBA provides me, I will be able to accomplish my goals — even if I don't know what they are yet.
What are you doing for fun this summer?
I am competing in horse shows, baking cupcakes and traveling around the East Coast.
