New Faculty: Destynie Sewell
Meet a new addition to CBA’s roster of diverse, dynamic faculty.
This fall, the UNO College of Business Administration welcomed nine new full-time faculty members — one of the largest classes in college history.
Destynie Sewell, Assistant Professor of Business Law and Ethics
J.D., Creighton University; MBA, University of Nebraska at Omaha
Destynie Sewell is proud to say that she was "born and bred right here in the big O." Her first job at age 13 was at Ak-Sar-Ben Race Track (now the site of Mammel Hall), cleaning up after horse races.
"I am humbled to return to the Aksarben area, many years later, and know that my working life will sunset right where it all began,” she says.
At CBA, Sewell plans to research labor and employment law, specifically as it relates to cultural influences in the corporate environment.
She also serves as the legal advisor to UNO’s Pre-Law Cohort, which focuses on students of the Goodrich Scholarship and Project Achieve programs who want to pursue a career in law. Recently, the cohort received the Nebraska State Bar Association Diversity Award for 2016.
Sewell says she is proud of the program’s accomplishments to encourage diversity in the state’s legal profession.

Why did you decide to become a professor?
My accomplishments are, in part, due to a handful of professors who really took an interest in me. Being a minority, from an economically depressed environment, I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life. Until I enrolled in UNO, I had no one to steer me in a positive direction academically. Thank God for my professors who mentored me along the way and cared enough about me to help me reach my goals. Because of them, I want to be a blessing to others and pay it forward.
What were you doing before this new job at UNO?
I managed the labor/employee relations, workers' compensation, employee benefits, and performance management teams in the human resources division for a hospital. The last few months of my tenure with the hospital I also substituted in as the hospital’s compliance officer.
What are your impressions so far of UNO and the College of Business Administration?
As a former student of UNO’s CBA, I am amazed at how far this college has come in terms of academic programs, technology, and infrastructure. The fact that a student can leave this college, not only with a degree, but also with various certifications in finance, human resources, etc., is amazing. There's even something for bio-scientists! Wow, I’m so proud to be back home!
