The UNO College of Business Administration Scholars Academy is a close-knit community of ambitious, high-achieving business students who want to challenge themselves while pursuing a bachelor’s degree.
During this four-year program, Scholars are mentored by Omaha-area business professionals, take special business courses taught by award-winning faculty, and gain real-world experience through community engagement and international travel. They also receive generous scholarships.
Scholars are selected the spring of their senior year in high school after a rigorous and competitive application process.
Meet new member Christian Hanus of Omaha, Nebraska.
Why did you choose UNO?
I chose UNO because it's a great school and has a business program. I'm really looking forward to furthering my education and myself. I love the city of Omaha, and everyone I know who's gone to UNO has had a positive experience. The Scholars Academy is a great program and a great opportunity that I can't wait for. I'm really happy I have the opportunity to attend UNO.
Why did you choose business as a major?
I chose business as my major because throughout high school it's been something I've really enjoyed learning about. I've taken all the business classes at my school, and each one has taught me something new and interesting that I've taken with me – anything from investments and entrepreneurship to business law. It's been a great experience, and I can't wait to keep learning.
What business concentration are you planning to pursue? Why?
As of right now I'm not sure what concentration I want to pursue, but I plan on taking classes and figuring out what I find most interesting and have the most fun with. I enjoy finance and investments and numbers, so right now that's what I'm leaning toward, but there's always the possibility my path will change and I'll find something else that I love to do.
What aspect of the Scholars Academy are you most looking forward to?
I'm most looking forward to forming relationships with other students who share my love for business. These will become some of my good friends throughout college, and I can't wait to meet them. I also can't wait to travel abroad and have internships. Both of these opportunities seem like really fun things to me.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to hang out with my friends and do fun things like play soccer or frisbee golf. I really enjoy physical activity, and I especially like to run and play soccer. I also really like to do things for the clubs I'm in; I love setting things up for Student Council and taking on responsibility in DECA. I just like being occupied with my time and not letting it go to waste.
What is one thing we would be surprised to know about you?
I've been to Alaska before. Contrary to popular belief it was not freezing cold, and I felt perfect in a sweatshirt. It was really an interesting experience because I went on a missions trip and we helped the community. It was amazing to be submerged in their culture. It was something I'm really glad I did, and I learned a lot on that trip.
