The UNO College of Business Administration Scholars Academy is a close-knit community of ambitious, high-achieving business students who want to challenge themselves while pursuing a bachelor’s degree.
During this four-year program, Scholars are mentored by Omaha-area business professionals, take special business courses taught by award-winning faculty, and gain real-world experience through community engagement and international travel. They also receive generous scholarships.
Scholars are selected the spring of their senior year in high school after a rigorous and competitive application process.
Meet new member Jaqueline Reyes Gadea of Omaha, Nebraska.
Why did you choose UNO?
While researching colleges, I was always drawn to the University of Nebraska at Omaha. It’s close to home, and I had always been told of the great opportunities that UNO held for Hispanic students and the support systems available on campus. Attending UNO is affordable, and I will be able to create memorable experiences. The diversity was also a factor that helped me when considering universities, and it just so happened that UNO stood out among the rest.
Why did you choose business as a major?
I wish to pursue a degree in business administration because I have been influenced by the small businesses in the South Omaha community. It allows me to see why many people came to the United States: opportunities. Throughout my youth, I was able to see small organizations flourish and grow. This in turn has motivated me to contribute someday locally and then hopefully internationally.
What business concentration are you planning to pursue? Why?
I specifically want to study international business with an emphasis in economics. Communication is a big aspect to business, and I have always found myself drawn to communicating and trying to understand others. The world is expanding in terms of globalization, and it is up to business leaders to become involved. This in turn motivates me to contribute to the world, make it better and educate others.
What aspect of the Scholars Academy are you most looking forward to?
I'm looking forward to the mentorships and internships. I hope this program allows me and the other Scholars to improve our leadership skills and aid in helping out within the community. I enjoy the fact that already entering college I will have peers who share similar interests and goals. I'm most excited for the rigor it will take to succeed and how the program pushes us to strive for the best at all times.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I try to make the most of my time, but on the rare occasion that I have some, I will watch Korean dramas. I started to become fascinated with the Korean culture my sophomore year of high school. If I am not watching my dramas, I am in my room playing some random melody on my piano. I find joy in music and sometimes will attempt to write my own melodies as well. I'll otherwise volunteer on the weekends with whatever opportunity is presented to me through National Honor Society.
What is one thing we would be surprised to know about you?
I am learning Korean. I am self-taught and have been learning for a little under six months. I hope to one day travel to South Korea and be able to immerse myself in their wonderful culture.
