The UNO College of Business Administration Scholars Academy is a close-knit community of ambitious, high-achieving business students who want to challenge themselves while pursuing a bachelor’s degree.
During this four-year program, Scholars are mentored by Omaha-area business professionals, take special business courses taught by award-winning faculty, and gain real-world experience through community engagement and international travel. They also receive generous scholarships.
Scholars are selected the spring of their senior year in high school after a rigorous and competitive application process.
Meet new member Collin Bailey of Lincoln, Nebraska.
Why did you choose UNO?
I chose UNO because I was impressed by the teachers, students, and environment from my first visit. I liked the College of Business Administration, and the internship program made UNO stand out over the other schools I visited. The dorms and modern facilities are outstanding, and I look forward to living on campus! Finally, the location is well placed for me as I am from Lincoln, so I can get away from home but still be close enough to visit if I want to.
Why did you choose business as a major?
I chose business as a major because I believe that I can best serve society in that field. I want to be an influence on the world and make a difference in people's lives. I developed interest my sophomore year when taking accounting courses, and I enjoyed the other business classes offered by my high school as well. Last summer I attended the Maverick Investment Camp. I felt engaged throughout the week and motivated to pursue a business career even more.
What business concentration are you planning to pursue? Why?
I plan on pursuing a concentration in Accounting or Finance. I like the structure and critical thinking involved with a career in accounting. At the same time, investment and the opportunity to help others grow in wealth interests me greatly. Following the stock market and learning about the world's trade is fascinating to me!
What aspect of the Scholars Academy are you most looking forward to?
The chance to develop relationships and take challenging courses with the other Scholars is what I look forward to most in the Academy. Working with other like-minded individuals is an exciting prospect! I hope to learn from other Scholars and grow as a young businessman. The Scholars Academy is an incredible opportunity, and I look forward to starting classes this fall.
What do you like to do in your free time?
When I am not working I spend most of my free time watching and playing soccer. I have played the game since I was little, and it is one of my favorite things to take part in. I also enjoy camping, kayaking, and other outdoor activities. I like reading books about investing, and spending time with my family is also important to me.
What is one thing we would be surprised to know about you?
Something most people don't know about me is that I am a pianist. I have played piano since I was 7 years old. I don't play as much as I used to, but I still like sitting down and playing songs when my family or friends are around. My favorite music to play is Christmas music!
