The UNO College of Business Administration Scholars Academy is a close-knit community of ambitious, high-achieving business students who want to challenge themselves while pursuing a bachelor’s degree.
During this four-year program, Scholars are mentored by Omaha-area business professionals, take special business courses taught by award-winning faculty, and gain real-world experience through community engagement and international travel. They also receive generous scholarships.
Scholars are selected the spring of their senior year in high school after a rigorous and competitive application process.
Meet new member Alexandra Lopez of Bellevue, Nebraska.
Why did you choose UNO?
I chose UNO because it is close to home, so I can be close to my family and attend my younger brother's basketball games. UNO also has a great business school with lots of internship opportunities and travel abroad programs.
Why did you choose business as a major?
I chose business as my major because it is very versatile and I don't just have to do one thing. I also chose business because it has opportunity for growth in a variety of ways and industries.
What business concentration are you planning to pursue? Why?
I want to concentrate on management and marketing because I am currently in DECA and it just clicks. I did a written project where I wrote a 30-page paper and had to figure out how to move a company from the U.S. to a different country. I was able to successfully sell a potential Eat Fit Go to Australia and place first in my category. It was difficult at times, but I really enjoyed the project overall because I had to market Eat Fit Go in a new way and manage the business.
What aspect of the Scholars Academy are you most looking forward to?
I am looking most forward to having a class with my cohort and getting to know all of them better. During the interview I got to know a lot of the candidates and have good conversations, so I hope I can continue those relationships with the cohort members.
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time I like to hang out with my friends. We are always going out to eat, driving around, having bonfires, or just relaxing. We also like to go fishing and go out to the lake every chance we get.
What is one thing we would be surprised to know about you?
I am super clumsy and have even been known to fall up the stairs.
