If it weren’t for taking Accounting with Susan Wellman during her junior year in High School, Sammy Young would have never discovered her passion. She knew she wanted to study accounting and become a CPA, while looking for colleges. Sammy grew up in Syracuse, only an hour away from Omaha. After visiting UNO for the first time, and selected in the CBA Scholars Academy, she knew UNO would be the best fit for her.
Sammy’s journey has been quite exceptional. While completing her undergrad degree, a BSBA with concentration in Accounting, she has completed multiple accounting internships. She has interned at two public accounting firms here in Omaha: worked as an audit intern at KPMG and as a tax intern at BKD.
“I found both internships to be extremely valuable in discovering specifically what area of accounting I wanted to work after all my formal education was complete,” Young explains.
Sammy returned to UNO in order to complete the 150 credit-hour requirement for the CPA exams, so she chose to complete her Master of Accounting. While completing her MAcc, she Is working as a Graduate Assistant for the CBA Strategy Team and assist with the Capstone Cup.
“I have found this experience to be a great learning experience to work outside of accounting for a time. The professors I work under, Dr. Miles, Dr. Bass, and Dr. Lundmark, are so helpful and have made my GA experience very worthwhile,” she says.
“When choosing where to complete my graduate studies, I ultimately chose UNO over my other options because I know amazing the people were. I have never once regretted my decision to study at UNO, both in my undergraduate and graduate studies.”
