Black History Month: Featuring Butrus Lazarus, MBA Student
In recognition of Black History Month, UNO CBA is recognizing Black faculty, students, alumni, and community members making an impact in Omaha and beyond.
We're proud to feature Butrus Lazarus, an MBA student at UNO CBA and graduate of CBA's BSBA program. We asked Lazarus what advice he would give to Black students and community members interested in business, why he chose UNO for his MBA, and where he's currently finding success.
What advice would you give Black students or community members interested in business, or striving for success in a certain field/industry?
"My advice to the Black students and community is to set your personal standard for yourself for whatever you plan to achieve, or becoming successful. Once you have a goal, commit yourself to achieve that. Of course it won’t be easy, but your commitment and dedication will guide and help you through. The advantage of studying business is that you can build skills that are in demand in many professional fields."
Why did you choose to pursue an MBA at UNO? What are your hopes after the program?
"UNO CBA has been a home to me when I was pursuing my undergrad program in Finance, Banking, and Portfolio Management from 2015 - 2019. After having a very positive and rewarding undergraduate experience, I knew I could not be happier to return to UNO and pursue an MBA because of the great program, resources, and connections that the college provides to students. I hope my MBA degree will add value to the work I do, especially in customer-facing roles, and open more opportunities."
What are you doing now that you're proud of?
"As of right now, I am working in a bank, and I am proud of what I have learned and accomplished for the past couple years. I am still striving to learn more, especially in the finance field. As far as community involvement, I do a volunteer mentorship program at Do Space (the non-profit community center for technology). I also served as the MBAA treasurer."
