Black History Month: Featuring Kya Carter, BSBA Student
In recognition of Black History Month, UNO CBA is recognizing Black faculty, students, alumni, and community members making an impact in Omaha and beyond.
We're proud to feature Kya Carter, a current undergraduate student in UNO CBA's Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) program. We checked in with Carter on her sources of motivation, where she's finding joy, and her hopes for the future.
Can you tell us about your education?
"I am currently majoring in Business Administration, and am thinking about concentrating in Marketing. I am expected to graduate in 2025."
What does it mean to you to be a student in business?
"In my opinion, being a business student is about expanding your horizons, learning how to be a good leader, and learning new skills that will benefit you in your future profession - and even as a person."
Who or what inspires you?
"My parents are the most important role models in my life. As well as instilling in me the values of compassion and kindness, they've also provided me with a sense of inner strength."
When do you feel like your voice is being heard and respected?
"When I'm with people I care about, I feel like my voice is heard the most. They have never made me feel as though I don't belong or that I'm not good enough. Throughout my life, I've never had a problem speaking my mind since that's how I was raised, but there are times when I feel like I must shout louder than others because of my skin color."
What do you hope to accomplish during and after the rest of your college experience?
"I aspire to one day run my own business. When I witness a Woman of Color starting her own business, I am inspired and motivated to follow in her footsteps. There is one thing I know for sure about my future: I want to leave a lasting impression and make a difference in the lives of others."
