Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: Featuring Joey Hackler, BSBA Student
In recognition of Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, UNO CBA is recognizing the stories of students and faculty and paying tribute to the generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans who enrich our country.
We're proud to feature Joey Hackler, a current undergraduate student in UNO CBA's Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) program. We checked in with Hackler on her sources of motivation, her goals and motivations, and her hopes for the future.
Can you tell us about your education?
"I'm majoring in Marketing and minoring in Finance. I'll be graduating late 2023 or early 2024."
What does it mean to you to be a student in business?
"Getting to build skills that are useful in any professional field. Business helped me build my management skills, and it made me learn how to be a better manager where I work. Also, developing the ability to present different kinds of information clearly and logically. Business, to me, is hopefully seeing myself being self-employed at some point in the future."
Who or what inspires you?
"Elon Musk inspires me to not give up. I see Elon as a very successful business owner and I have a feeling I could be like him in the future by having my own business and being successful. Elon Musk is very motivating, and uses his motivation to make products that help our future.
One of my favorite quotes from Elon is 'I could either watch it happen or be a part of it.' Elon Musk doesn’t want to watch things happen, he wants to get things done. He wants what is better for our future."
What advice would you give to students or community members?
"Look up to an inspirational quote! For me, my favorite quote is 'Every day it gets a little easier…but you gotta do it every day - that’s the hard part. But it does get easier,' from Bojack Horseman. Always work hard, stay committed to your studies, and most importantly, don’t give up even when you feel like giving up. Otherwise, if you do, you won’t be successful."
When do you feel like your voice is being heard and respected?
"When someone listens to me and trusts me. When someone trusts my judgement like asking me for advice, or shows that they value my thoughts and opinions, then I feel respected."
What do you hope to accomplish during and after the rest of your college experience?
"I am looking to accomplish bringing back the Women’s Lacrosse Club and being able to play against other schools. Post-college would be starting an internship, hopefully with Mutual of Omaha, either in Finance or Marketing."
Joey welcomes opportunities for professional and academic development, or further conversations, on LinkedIn.
