The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) College of Business Administration School of Accounting (SOA) is addressing the national shortage of accountants with an innovative High School Initiative. In partnership with the newly formed Standing Advisory Board, the SOA Advisory Board, and Beta Alpha Psi members, this initiative introduces Nebraska high school students to the diverse opportunities within the accounting profession.
The High School Initiative seeks to spark interest among students across the state by showcasing the variety of career paths accounting offers. “Although accounting enrollment levels remain strong at UNO, this initiative is about creating early awareness and supporting high school students’ aspirations,” said Leonard Sommer, Chair Emeritus of the SOA Advisory Board. “We are not only building the pipeline for future students but also highlighting the incredible young professionals leading these outreach efforts.”
Expanding Opportunities Through Outreach and Innovation
The initiative began with presentations in Omaha-area high schools, expanding awareness of accounting’s potential. Its success inspired the creation of Accounting Adventures™, a summer camp developed in collaboration with UNO’s College of Business Administration (CBA) Prep Academy. The CBA Prep Academy supports first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students by equipping them with academic skills, exposure, and opportunities to thrive in college and beyond.
Accounting Adventures™ is a five-day immersive camp designed for a diverse cohort of 20 students. It provides hands-on exposure to accounting in a college setting. The camp held sessions in 2023 and 2024, generating significant participant interest.
“I’m incredibly proud of the teams involved in this initiative,” said Kailey Riskowski, Chair of the SOA Advisory Board. “These efforts are opening doors for students to see the exciting, evolving opportunities in accounting. Whether it’s technological advancements or the profession’s essential role in business, we’re showcasing a field full of promise.”
Broadening Impact with Mini-Camps
To meet growing demand, the SOA has expanded its efforts by offering Accounting Adventures™ mini-camps each semester. These half-day programs invite more high school students to experience the college environment while learning about the profession's dynamic career paths.
“The High School Initiative has made remarkable strides,” said Colin Siert, CPA and member of the Standing Advisory Board. “This collaborative effort among faculty, corporate sponsors, and high school educators has shown students how accounting blends diversity, innovation, and adaptability to technology. It’s been an honor to share this profession’s vast opportunities with the next generation.”
A Commitment to Nebraska’s Future
“The UNO School of Accounting remains steadfast in its mission to inspire and prepare future accounting professionals,” said Dr. Roopa Venkatesh, CMA, Director of the School of Accounting, and Union Pacific Professor of Accounting. “With the continued support of its advisory boards, corporate partners, and the Nebraska community, the SOA is committed to ensuring that students across the state can access the resources and mentorship needed to learn more about the accounting profession and succeed.”
