Spring 2022 Capstone Cup Results
The UNO CBA Capstone Cup is a semester-long competition compulsory for every student enrolled in the undergraduate strategy course, Corporate & Business Strategy. Students are placed in the role of a consulting firm and asked to digest a complex business problem, develop a creative and practical solution, and build a presentation that communicates their analyses and recommendations to a panel of judges. In spring of 2021, students were tasked with developing a strategic recommendation for Scooter's Coffee.
The Case Brief - Scooter's Coffee: Be Amazing
Founded in 1998, Scooter's began franchising just a few years later primarily to family and friends. Fast forward 20 years, Scooter's had 181 stores with 35 more on the way. Since then, the number of franchises has doubled in size. Scooter's Coffee operates just over 400 franchise drive-through coffee locations and prides itself on the core values of integrity, love, humility, and courage.
Its franchise locations primarily take the form of a smaller, drive-through only coffee kiosk, but some locations offer a larger drive-through coffeehouse featuring a dining area. Scooter's opened over 200 stores in 2021 and is on track to have 1,000 stores in operation within the next few years as more potential franchisees are attracted to the company given its recent explosive growth. Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota have each reached franchisee capacity based on Scooter's metrics, meaning no additional franchises can be built in those states.
However, Scooter's is looking to continue adding new locations to the 30 other states in which they operate. As Scooter's seems to be poised for continued growth in the foreseeable future, it must contend with increased competition in a difficult to differentiate market while also continuing to identify additional growth avenues that can be supported by its operations.
As Scooter's looks to the future, its operations, market position, and growth strategy must all work together. Consultants are charged with identifying what adjustments must be made and what new opportunities will arise so that Scooter's can best position itself for the future.
