Overview
The School of Communication offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree programs with majors in Communication Studies (course prefix is CMST) and Journalism and Media Communication (course prefix is JMC). Students may double major within the School of Communication by completing the requirements for both majors.
The requirements for the major in Communication Studies includes a minimum of 57 credits, plus 15 credits in a second field of study for a Bachelor of Science in Communication and 16 hours in a foreign language for a Bachelor of Arts in Communication.
The major in journalism and media communication requires a minimum of 57 credits, plus 15 credits in a second field of study for a Bachelor of Science in Communication degree and 16 hours in a foreign language for a Bachelor of Arts in Communication degree. Journalism and media communication majors must select one of two concentrations - emerging media or public relations/advertising.
A total of 120 credits are required for bachelor's degrees, which includes general education requirements and general electives.

General Education Requirements
All students enrolled in a degree program at the College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media must also satisfy UNO's general education requirements. Additional information on these requirements can be found on the University's General Education webpage. Please consult with an academic advisor for recommended choices for the major. Students may need to take additional courses as general electives to meet the university's 120 credit hours minimum requirement.

Communication StudiesStudents may earn a minor in communication studies. To fulfill the minor, students must complete 18 hours in communication studies courses, including 12 hours of upper-level (3000- and 4000-level) courses. All CMST classes except the course used to fulfill the general education oral communication competency (CMST 1110 or CMST 2120) may count toward the minor in communication studies. Journalism and Media CommunicationStudents may earn a minor in Journalism and Media Communication with courses selected from JMC offerings. To fulfill the minor, students must complete 18 hours in JMC offerings with 9 of those credit hours in JMC 1500, JMC 2100, and JMC 2200 and 9 credits of chosen courses at the 3000 or 4000 level. Within the JMC major, students may not have a minor in another concentration besides the primary concentration they have selected for their major. For example, students following the emerging media concentration cannot minor in the PR/Ad concentration. All courses in the minor must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher. Visual CommunicationStudents may earn a minor in Visual Communication and Culture (VCC) by taking 18 hours in classes approved by the VCC Coordinator that align with the underlying philosophy of the minor. Three of the hours must include Introduction to Visual Communication and Culture (JMC 3700). The remaining 15 credits will come from both within the School of Communication (at least six credits/two classes) and outside the school (at least six credits/two classes). Nine of the total hours in the minor must be at the 3000-4000 level. Courses may not be used for both the VCC minor and other major or minor programs, without approval from both VCC and major advisors. For students who are majoring in the School of Communication, courses may be used for the VCC minor and a student’s general education requirements. School of Communication classes that journalism and media communication majors apply toward the VCC minor must come from communication studies. School of Communication classes that communication studies majors apply toward the minor must come from journalism and media communication. All courses in the minor must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher. |
