The School of Health and Kinesiology offers four minors: Sports Medicine, Public Health, Human Performance and Worksite Wellness.
Sports Medicine
Occupations in the sports medicine realm are among the fastest growing within the healthcare industry. To meet the needs and prepare students for careers in these occupations, exposing students who may have an interest in this area to basic content knowledge is paramount.
This minor is for students outside the Kinesiology major, yet have an interest in potentially pursuing a career or advanced studies within the sports medicine field. Students who obtain the sports medicine minor will be exposed to content related to the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of sport-related injuries and illnesses.
Public Health
Public Health is a discipline centered on solving complex health problems via community-based and systems-level approaches. Public health practitioners address the social determinants of health that lead to inequity and engage in advocacy to eliminate health disparities to ensure healthy populations.
A minor in Public Health will introduce students to foundational knowledge and practices that can be applied to a variety of health and community-related issues.
Human Performance
Many students are becoming increasingly interested in human performance either from a personal improvement perspective or from an employment opportunity perspective. This Human Performance minor allows students to optimize their personal wellness through development of personal fitness programming.
Students in this minor will receive instruction on topics related to learning the value of physical activity and fitness as well as the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors necessary to enhance fitness and wellness.
Worksite Wellness
The benefits of a worksite wellness program are increasingly being recognized by both the employee and the employer. For employees, benefits may include increased job satisfaction, reduced stress, and improved health. For employers, benefits include reduced absenteeism, increased productivity, and reduced health care/insurance costs.
To achieve these benefits, organizations are seeking qualified professionals who are trained to develop and provide health and wellness programs.
This minor provides students in different fields the baseline knowledge necessary to be able to develop worksite wellness programs as well as better prepare them for responsibilities they may have in their future careers.
