Omaha – Dr. Susan McWilliams, associate professor of early childhood education in the College of Education, recently received a Teachers’ Choice Award for her book, Beyond the Flannel Board.
A Learning Magazine Teachers’ Choice Award is one of the most recognized and prestigious awards in the educational market. Teachers’ Choice is the only awards program that is exclusively judged by teachers in the classroom. Products are evaluated on quality, instructional value, ease of use, and innovation. Dr. McWilliams’ award was officially announced in the Jan. 2019 publication of Learning Magazine.
Beyond the Flannel Board demystifies the story-retelling experience for teachers of young children by identifying effective, intentional teaching and learning practices through a story-retelling approach implemented across an entire curriculum.
In 2017, Beyond the Flannel Board received a Tillywig Brain Child Award. Reviewers at Tillywig described the book as "Marvelously fresh and insightful... Cover to cover, it's an enjoyable, highly instructive read that paves the way for teachers to help young students get the most out of the story retelling experience."
