Meet two graduates of the accelerated master's certification program at UNO.
Jess Walker
Science Teacher at Millard North High School
2023 CEHHS Outstanding Graduate Student Award Winner
"The Teacher Academy Project is a great (and fast) way to obtain a teaching certificate and master's degree if not previously involved in education. You are fully supported throughout the program by terrific mentors. They cover everything from the basics all the way to helping prepare you for the final capstone project. I am very thankful for my involvement in the program; it helped me find a position I love, and I made great friends along the way!"
Erika Lewis
Social Studies Teacher at Papillion La Vista South High School
2023 James Madison Fellowship Awardee
"When I talk to my students... sometimes we put so much pressure on kids to be like, 'What do you want to do? Figure your life out!' And I’m living proof that sometimes, life will throw you curveballs. Sometimes life will throw you opportunities. Never stop–there’s something you want? Go out and get after it. Put in the work to make it happen. Don’t ever lose that passion for what you love and what you love to do."

Dr. Derrick Nero
UNO Assistant Professor of Engineering Education, Teacher Education
"The Teacher Academy Project (TAP) was invaluable in providing expedient and effective means for me to attain my teaching certification. I was fully prepared to start and complete a bachelor's degree in education in my transition from engineering to education. TAP proved to be ideal in its plan of study, pacing, student teaching placement, and peers.
"The TAP professors and staff worked holistically with us by pairing our grounded professional experiences with our burgeoning education learning. I practice that to this day with both graduate and undergraduate students – integrating their lived experiences with course learning objectives. TAP made possible a nearly 20-year career in secondary and higher education."
