Biography
Kristina Stamatis is a joining the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska Omaha as an Assistant Professor of Literacy. She recently graduated with her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado Boulder with a degree in Learning Sciences and Human Development. Prior to graduate school, Kristina worked as a secondary literacy specialist, coach, and curriculum writer. Her research focuses on anti-racist teaching, storytelling, and literacy education across formal and informal educational spaces. Additionally, she is interested in the ways that jazz and other art forms can be used to further theoretical perspectives that support understandings of identity development. Most recently, her research has focused on collaborative projects supporting historically marginalized youth to create their own museum exhibits through a process of community curation. In her spare time, Kristina plays percussion and dances with a Brazilian samba band. She is also an avid backpacker, skier,and hiker, and enjoys traveling and working on the throughlines project, a storytelling project she has run since 2013.
Teaching Interests
Kristina currently teaches literacy methods and research courses for UNO undergraduate and masters students. Her teaching interests include courses across teacher education and the learning sciences, as well as courses on Race, Diversity and Learning; Educational Foundations; English Language Arts for Secondary Students; Differentiated Instruction; Project-Based Learning and Literacy.
Research Interests
Kristina's most recent research projects include working collaboratively with teachers and students to engage in narrative work with young people to examine the stories in their communities. Additionally, her research focuses on identity development, narrative as tool for disrupting whiteness and white supremacy, teacher learning and identities; informal STEAM education, and community storytelling, representation and curation.
Service Summary
Kristina is currently serving as a member of the Diversity, Equity, Access and Inclusion committee for the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences. Additionally, she serves as a faculty mentor for the Teacher Education Diversity Organization (TEDO), and on the literacy and graduate committees for the Teacher Education Department at UNO. She also serves as a reviewer for a number of professional journals and conferences.
