Housed in the School of Health & Kinesiology at UNO, the Vascular and Metabolic Phenotyping Research Lab is a partnership between faculty members Dr. Song-young Park and Dr. Gwenael Layec.
Dr. Park and Dr. Layec, along with a team of student researchers, study how vascular function and muscle metabolism are affected by aging, certain medical conditions, and exposure to environmental stressors.
Current research areas include:
- The roles of mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress in healthy aging and aging-related diseases such as peripheral artery disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure, and hypertension.
- Cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength of spinal cord injury (SCI) patients and wheelchair sport athletes, most specifically the relationship between cardiovascular and skeletal muscle fitness level and the cardiovascular/skeletal muscle disease development and quality of life.
- How exposure to some environmental stressors can alters the body’s function.
- Long Covid impact on physiological function.
