2018 Computer Science High School Challenge
To celebrate “National Computer Science Education Week,” the Computer Science (CS) Department of the College of Information Science and Technology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha is sponsoring the 10th Annual "Computer Science High School Challenge" which includes a CS Quiz Bowl and a Programming Competition on Friday, December 7th, 2018. The Quiz Bowl is from 10:00AM – 12:00PM and the Programming Competition is from 1:00PM – 4:00PM (lunch will be provided). Your school is invited to send teams (three students in each team plus a sponsoring teacher, with up to two teams per event for each school) to participate. The two events are independent; you can choose to field teams in one or the other or both. A student can participate in one or both events.
The Quiz Bowl allows teams to demonstrate their knowledge in computer science and computing technology. The Programming Competition tests the teams’ programming abilities in solving simple computational problems. Basic knowledge and experience in coding is expected. Machines will be provided for teams, or they may bring their own laptop to work on. Languages allowed are Java, Python, C, C++, and Ruby. Additional languages may be made available upon request. It should be great fun for all!
Certificates and awards are issued to winning teams and individuals.
Registration is now closed. However, you can still sign up to be on the waitlist and we will notify you by November 21 if an opening becomes available.
Early registration is recommended, with a deadline of November 7th. Due to space limitations, we can accept only up to 25 teams in each event on a first-come-first-served basis. The following information is required:
- High School Name
- Team Name
- Team Members (name, year in school)
- Sponsor (teacher name, contact information – email, phone number, etc.)
- Event (Quiz Bowl or Programming Competition – teams participating in both events need to register for each one separately)

Quiz Bowl Contest Rules
The UNO National Computer Science Education Week Computer Science Bowl is a “Pub Quiz” style trivia game.
Each team will have three students. Every team is provided with an answer sheet for each category and scratch paper.
Questions will be both read to and visually presented to the teams over a projector. Teams will write their answer for each question on the provided answer sheet. Each round will have a theme. After each round the answer sheets for that round will be collected and the answers given.
At the end of the normal rounds a final question or problem will be given. Teams will be given the topic of the question but not the question itself, and at that time will wager any amount of points earned thus far in the competition. The team or teams that correctly or best solves the problem will be awarded their wager, others will lose the wagered points.
Team placement in the competition is determined by the amount of points after the final problem.
Questions will be worth 10, 20, or 30 points depending on difficulty. An incorrect answer will cost the team half of the points that question is worth.
Contest Location
The contest will be held at the Peter Kiewit Institute (PKI) of Information Science and Technology at Room 158.
1110 S. 67th Street
Omaha, NE 68106
Teams are allowed to park in any lot around the PKI building the afternoon of the contest without a permit.
