NCJR director, Dr. Ryan Spohn, in collaboration with Georgetown University’s Center for Juvenile Justice Reform, has served on an interdisciplinary team tasked with addressing racial and ethnic disparities in the juvenile justice system in Douglas County. This brochure represents the proposed intervention that is the culmination of this capstone project. The overall goal of the project is to reduce the likelihood that chronic school absenteeism leads to formal juvenile justice system involvement. Chronic absenteeism is one path to involvement in the juvenile justice system and disproportionately impacts low-income families of color. The team is focused on increasing access to community support services for families and reducing racial and ethnic disparities contributing to chronic absenteeism. Families will be matched with specialized providers to address specific needs in order to increase school attendance and decrease system involvement. Click here to view project trifold.
