Academic Advising for Social Work
Navigating higher education can often feel stressful and confusing for students, and even overwhelming at times. Advisors help students by giving them the right tools to succeed, and by teaching them how to gather information, and make academic decisions and informed choices. Our academic advisors offer one-on-one advising to prospective, transfer, and pre-social work students, as well as students who have been formally admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) programs.
When should I meet with my academic advisor?
Students typically meet with their academic advisor at least once a semester to ensure they are enrolling in the correct courses, and meeting the requirements of their degree program. Students can see their enrollment window in their MavCONNECT account, and should take that window into consideration when scheduling their advising appointment. Additional enrollment information can also be found here: Office of the University Registrar. During the fall semester, peak advising time is October and November. During the spring semester, peak advising time is March and April.
What is MavCONNECT?
MavCONNECT provides students with access to online scheduling of advising appointments and information regarding campus resources. For advisors, MavCONNECT is a central location to track appointments, keep notes and files, send messages, and more.
What username and password do I use?
Students can log into MavCONNECT using their UNO NetID (ex: jsmith) and password. This is the same username and password students use to log into Canvas. Prospective students and transfer students who experience trouble with MavCONNECT or do not have access to MavCONNECT, should contact socialworkadvising@unomaha.edu to schedule an appointment.
