OMAHA - The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) has announced its fifth round of building partner organizations to be housed in the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center (Weitz CEC). Six new organizations – one from UNO and five community-based organizations – were selected, bringing the total number of building partner organizations to 38, which includes UNO’s four signature outreach programs housed in the Weitz CEC.
The selection process consisted of an initial written application, followed by interviews with the Weitz CEC Building Advisory Committee, composed of community and university representatives. The committee made formal recommendations to senior leaders at UNO, for the final decision.
The new building partner organizations include:
Every Bite Counts
Every Bite Counts is a student run organization built to provide assistance in recovering food otherwise thrown away for the purpose of giving back to under-served individuals, especially youth, in our surrounding community.
Down Syndrome Alliance of the Midlands
The Down Syndrome Alliance of the Midlands is committed to connecting those touched by Down syndrome through education, advocacy and support.
Urban Bird and Nature Alliance
The Urban Bird and Nature Alliance is a non-profit organization established to appreciate, respect and value, protect, educate and support the preservation and conservation of nature in urban environments pertaining to urban forestry, sustainable landscapes, bird life, wildlife and natural resources.
Coalition Rx
The mission of Coalition Rx is to reduce the misuse of prescription and non-prescription medicines by raising awareness and partnering with community organizations to provide public and professional education, prevention and treatment resources and policy advocacy.
Nebraska Civic Engagement Table
The Nebraska Civic Engagement Table is a statewide nonprofit, nonpartisan organization whose goal is to build an electorate representative of all Nebraskans where everyone is able to participate in the democratic process and members of the rising electorate have their voices heard in the policymaking decisions that affect their lives, their families, and their communities.
Nebraska Extension
Nebraska Extension serves all 93 Nebraska counties with Extension offices located in 83 counties. Over 170 Extension Educators are located in county Extension offices provided by county government. Extension Educators and Assistants work in the areas of beef systems, community environment, community vitality, crops and water, food, nutrition and health, 4-H youth development, the learning child.
About the Weitz CEC
The mission of the Weitz CEC is to contribute positively and measurably to the community’s quality of life by creating, supporting, and expanding mutually beneficial partnerships, engaged scholarship, and academic and student programming that create tomorrow’s leaders and agents of change. As building partners housed in the Weitz CEC, these organizations will have access to UNO resources such as UNO’s nationally recognized Service Learning Academy, the Office of Civic and Social Responsibility, campus life, as well as nonprofit capacity building, state-of-the-art built-in technology and meeting spaces, and visitor parking.
