Exhibit: A Demonstration in Democracy: The Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam

Criss Library first floor – Photographs of the October 15, 1969 Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam demonstration in Omaha taken by Dr. Sam Walker are on display in UNO Libraries’ Archives & Special Collections through November 1, 2019.

The exhibit features reproductions of over 20 of the photographs shot by Walker when he was a UNO graduate student in the history department. The first national Moratorium Day demonstration against the war in Vietnam was held on October 15, 1969, with protests in cities and towns across the country, including Omaha. The photographs of Dr. Walker on display document protestors marching from Creighton University to the courthouse. Events in Omaha were planned throughout the day. This display of Dr. Walker’s photos is supplemented with material about earlier demonstrations of support at UNO for U.S. military involvement in Vietnam, the experiences of enlisted men in Vietnam as seen through photographs and letters sent home in 1966-1968, and Moratorium activities on the UNO campus. Events during the Moratorium at UNO included speeches, reading the names of Americans killed in Vietnam, a free exchange of ideas session in the library auditorium, rallies, and other activities.

All items on display are from Archives & Special Collections. The exhibit was curated by Director of Archives & Special Collections Amy Schindler. The exhibit opens August 2, 2019, and runs through November 1, 2019, on the lower level of Criss Library in Archives & Special Collections. The exhibit is open Monday-Friday 8 AM – 5 PM and by appointment.
