February is National Canned Food Month and to celebrate Criss Library is hosting a canned food drive to benefit the Maverick Food Pantry, a vital resource that provides food and essential items to students, faculty, and staff in need.
The food drive will run from February 3 to March 2, with donation bins placed in the library’s front entrance and next to the canned food display near the Creative Production Lab on the second floor. All members of the UNO community are encouraged to participate by donating non-perishable food items and household essentials. High-demand items include:
- Toiletries and personal hygiene items (individually packaged)
- Snacks (granola bars, fruit cups, trail mixes, etc.)
- Ready-to-eat meals that do not require refrigeration
- New or gently used reuseable bags
- Menstrual products
- Parenting products (formula, diapers, etc.)
- Can openers
- Anything on their normal inventory list found on the Maverick Food Pantry current Needs list.
The Maverick Food Pantry has long served as a safety net for those experiencing food insecurity, providing support to ensure that no member of the UNO community goes hungry. By partnering with Criss Library, the Pantry hopes to expand its reach and stock its shelves with enough supplies to meet growing demand.
The Criss Library is more than just a place for books; it’s a hub for community engagement. We are proud to support the Maverick Food Pantry and invite everyone to join us in making a difference. We proudly support all of our UNO community, especially those in need.
In addition to physical donations, the food drive also offers opportunities for monetary contributions. Funds collected will be used to purchase perishable items and address specific dietary needs. Donations can be made online through the Maverick Food Pantry’s website.
The initiative highlights the importance of collaboration in addressing food insecurity and ensuring that every Maverick has access to the resources they need to thrive. For more information about the food drive, including hours of operation for the Maverick Food Pantry and a complete list of needed items contact the Maverick Food Pantry at unomavfoodpantry@unomaha.edu.
Together, the Criss Library and the Maverick Food Pantry are working to build a stronger, more supportive campus community—one can at a time.
