Why Referrals Matter
In DASH, we discuss the importance of building a strong safety net. The more ropes (authentic human support) we can offer and tie together, the stronger the support. When you are aware of more resources and continue to build your social capital, your margin of error increases because you now have more opportunities and ways to adapt to turbulence. Even if you have support capital, if there is an absence of knots, the student can fall through the cracks.
Strong safety net1 = strands of rope2 x number of knots tied3
The work of DASH and all on-campus and off-campus partners creates this ecosystem for students.
Studying the Thompson Scholars Learning Communities within the NU System, research team members of the Promoting At-Promise Student Success project created the Ecological Validation Model of Student Success. The model focuses on acknowledging the interconnected nature of student needs and providing holistic support.
