Maintaining a valid passport as an international student is important for your nonimmigrant status in the U.S.
International students must have valid passports with an expiration date of six months beyond their length of stay in the U.S.
If Your Passport Expires or Will Expire Soon
If your passport expires while attending UNO, take steps early to renew it, as it can take longer than renewing in your home country.
- Contact your U.S. Consulate or Embassy for instructions and start the renewal process immediately.
- Once you receive your new passport, keep the expired passport for your records.
- Valid F-1 or J-1 visas will remain valid even when attached to an expired passport.
We recommend taking these steps at least six months before your passport expiration date.
