Academic Readings and Resources
Dear YSEALI Participants,
We are excited to soon welcome you to Omaha. As the Academic Director of YSEALI, I will be leading the team of professors and guest lecturers.
Before arriving at UNO, I would like for you to read the two attached selections:
- Excerpt from Bennis & Goldsmith Learning to Lead. This is a great textbook that I use in my Civic Leadership course. The Preface summarizes a shift in how we understand leadership in the 21st century: from command-and-control of the old days to collaborative leadership of today. Chapter 1 argues that leadership is a lifelong journey of learning about ourselves and the world we live in. There are a number of questions for reflection that you should think about and even write down your answers to.
- Excerpt from Harold Saunders’ book Politics is About Relationship: A Worldview for the Citizens’ Century. As former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, Saunders has a very interesting view that politics in the 21st century is not about power so much as about relationships. Please read this and think about why you agree or disagree with this given your own experiences.
I am anxious to hear your reactions to these readings once we are together soon.
Looking forward,
Patrick
