International Education Week

“International Education Week” falls on November 14 – November 18 this year, and once again will be hosted by University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) International Programs. The week highlights and celebrates international education in its various forms.
Every year, UNO welcomes more than 1,800 international students and scholars from 112 countries and sends over 300 studentsaround the world to study, intern, volunteer, perform, and research abroad. UNO’s dedication to international education is woven throughout its mission, recognizing the importance of engaging students with the global community.
2016 marks the 17th year of International Education Week at UNO, which will be celebrated with a wide variety of events, including:
International Photo Contest (Nov. 11 – 18)
This year’s theme is “Eyes on the World,” and students, staff, and faculty are invited to show us their world through their eyes. Submissions of international photography will be taken until November 9, with voting on the UNO Education Abroad Facebook from Nov. 11 – 16 and displays in Criss Library from Nov. 11 - 18. Winners and prizes will be announced at Café Internationale on Nov. 17.

Eighth Annual Charles Gildersleeve “Know Your World” Lecture (Nov. 14)
Dr. Jonathan Benjamin-Alvarado presents this year’s lecture, “The Ghost of Helms-Burton: Necessary Course Correction on the Path to Normalized US-Cuban Relations.” The event will be held in the MBSC Chancellor’s Room from 12 – 1 PM and will be catered with free food and drink.
Education Abroad Tables & Information Sessions (Nov. 15 – 18)
Education Abroad comes to you! Representatives from Education Abroad will be tabling in Mammel Hall and Milo Bail Student Center on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. On Wednesday and Friday, students can attend two of the “Know Before You Go” information sessions for study abroad students – the focus will be on Getting Involved Abroad and Flying & Booking Flights.
Café Internationale (Nov. 17)
This is UNO’s signature International Education Week event! International Programs hosts an open house with refreshments, music, country display tables, and international cultural presentations from participants in International Professional Development (IPD) and Intensive English Language (ILUNO). Photo contest winners and prizes will be announced. This is an event not to be missed.
Nebraska Neighbors (Nov. 18 – 19)
UNO international students have the opportunity to experience life in Nebraska in two days of cultural exchange. Students will visit West Point, visiting schools, Main Street, farms, and a recording studio, and homestay families will host students for their visit.
Throughout the entire week, the Bridging Cultures Exhibit in ASH 343 will highlight the history of the lost city of Bethsaida, Israel, while International Cuisine will be featured in the MBSC Food Court.

As Omaha’s premier metropolitan university with global engagement as one of the academic priority areas, UNO is home to a wide variety of study abroad and international travel programs. Recent achievements by UNO students, staff, and faculty include involvement in a $2.2 million grant for academic programs in Afghan universities, faculty-led jazz performances in Latvia and Lithuania, and two Gilman Scholar recipients in Italy and Ireland.
