International Education Week (IEW) is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. IEW is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

In addition to our live events, take some time on your own to travel the globe in an immersive virtual environment. Click here to sign up for an account with 360 Global Learning Experiences, available to UNO students from Nov. 15-28. With 360 GLE you can explore 360-degree videos and multimedia about climate innovations in Germany, politics and culture in Budapest, sea turtle conservation in Costa Rica, ancient Rome, modern India, and much more!
Early Special Event: Afghanistan Resettlement Stakeholders Town Hall
Tuesday, Nov. 9 | 12:30 - 2 P.M.
UNO International Programs and The U.S. Department of State cordially invites you to join a virtual Town Hall for Afghanistan Resettlement Stakeholders on Nov. 9. The event will provide the growing community of Americans working to support the resettlement of our Afghan allies with inter-agency updates on Operation Allies Welcome, information from key supporting partners, and an overview of opportunities for individuals, communities, and organizations to help welcome our new neighbors. Sher Jan Ahmadzai, the Director of the Center for Afghanistan Studies at University of Nebraska Omaha, is one of 7 guests asked to give remarks during the Town Hall.

Virtual Live Session: Local People: Meet the Madrileños | 9 A.M.
Join us as we meet some locals of Madrid – known as madrileños! As we walk the medieval streets of this historic city (also the capital of Spain!), we’ll stop in at a variety of hotspots to speak with locals and hear about everyday life in Madrid. We expect visits such as:
- a tapas restaurant
- a local store
- a food market
- a visit with local craftsmen/women
- and more!

Virtual Live Session: Urban Gardening in Medellín | 11 A.M.
Discover the positive social and environmental impacts urban gardening can have upon your community as you hear from an inspirational local entrepreneur.
During this interactive experience, you will learn how to reduce your everyday carbon footprint while also learning expert techniques to be able to start your own home composting.

International Apparel: All Day
In honor of International Education Week, we encourage all international students and international faculty/staff to wear clothing and accessories from their home country to class/work at UNO on Wednesday, Nov. 17th.
Study Abroad Spirit: All Day
Study abroad alumni are invited to show their study abroad spirit by wearing clothing from their host university abroad featuring the school's name, logo, location, or mascot. If you don't have something from your host university, wearing a t-shirt or sweatshirt with the name of the city/country where you studied abroad or gear from the local sports teams is another great option.

Virtual Live Session: Walking Tour of the “Queen of the Adriatic” | 8:30 A.M.
Starting at the Punta della Dogana and ranging all the way through the University area of Venice, the district of Dorsoduro in Venice is one of the richest “sestieri” in terms of art and architecture.
During our virtual walk, we will see the Church of Salute, and the Gesuati temple dedicated to St Mary of the Rosary and view the Palladian church of Redentore across the canal on the island of Giudecca. We will pass by the oldest gondola yard still active after 400 years as well as the typical “bacaros” of Venice with their well-known “cichetti”.
Annual Gildersleeve Lecture: Islam and Politics in Afghanistan after the Taliban by Nazif Shahrani, Indiana University | Noon - 1:30 P.M.
Charlie Gildersleeve was one of the founding faculty members of the International Studies Major at UNO. He was always available to help students with study-abroad independent studies courses. His guest lecture each semester in the International Studies intro course was a highlight for all students. He took it upon himself to make international students feel at home in class and on campus with his inimitable warmth. In memory of his contributions to International Studies Majors and to international students at UNO, UNO International Programs presents the Charles Gildersleeve "Know-Your-World" Lecture each year during International Education Week.

Center for Afghanistan Studies (CAS) invites you to the Refugee and Resettlement Awareness Panel Discussion during the International Education Week at Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center, UNO. The panel discussion will raise awareness about the state of refugees in the United States with a particular focus on Afghan refugees coming to Omaha, Nebraska. The event will feature various Nebraska-based organizations involved in refugee resettlement and assistance and members of the Afghan community who will relate their exodus experience to their Omaha community members.

Representatives of agencies involved in refugee resettlement and assistance in Nebraska and the Afghan community will be open for discussions with UNO students, faculty, and Omaha community visitors. Come and learn more about whats available and how you can help.
Virtual Live Session: Tour of the Muslim Quarter | 10 A.M.
Many of the boundaries that we imagine separate Israel from Palestine, Christian from Muslim, and East from West, are to a significant degree artificial. In this tour, we will explore the historical and religious connections of Jews and Christians to sites in the Muslim quarter. We will virtually walk the famous Via Dolorosa and its environs to appreciate the area’s richness and diversity. Come along as we explore churches, synagogues, study halls, markets, and more on a journey towards understanding the traditions and people of this holy city.
