If you are in an emergency, call the local emergency number immediately. After notifying local emergency services and getting yourself out of immediate danger, call your program or host university’s emergency line for assistance.
After an emergency has occurred, please contact the Education Abroad office as soon as possible at 402.554.3168. We will need your information, your location and program, and details of what has happened.
Our regular business hours are 8 A.M. - 5 P.M. CST.
If you need assistance outside of business hours, you should call UNO Public Safety at 402.554.2648 and they can put you in touch with the after-hours emergency contact.
Medical Emergencies
If you are facing a medical emergency, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Your program should be able to assist you in locating a nearby emergency health care facility. You will need to notify your international insurance company as soon as possible. Most UNO students will have purchased AIG Travel Guard Insurance through Education Abroad.
AIG has a dedicated team of professionals who are available to support University of Nebraska travelers. If you experience an emergency while traveling abroad, contact AIG's international emergency line at +1.715.295.1194 from outside the U.S. This number is set as a collect/reverse charge call.
If you have questions about doctors, hospitals, medications, or resources in the areas where you will be traveling, log-in to AIG's travel assistance portal, call the international number while abroad, or call their toll-free U.S. phone number prior to departure at +1.877.832.3523. AIG has a global network of providers with the ability to directly bill to the insurance provider. If you need support, your first step is to contact AIG.
If you do not have AIG Travel Guard Insurance, you will need to contact your international insurance provider. This is the most common program with an individual insurance provider:
International Student Exchange Programs (ISEP)
Major Events
If a major event has occurred that could affect your safety (natural disaster, public attack, etc.), please check in with your family, your program, and the Education Abroad Office as soon as possible. AIG insurance holders have evacuation coverage in the event of an eligible political crisis or natural disaster.
Remember that there is a difference between a true emergency and a somewhat urgent situation. Please do not use emergency numbers if you are not in danger, can effectively manage the situation without assistance, or can wait until business hours to contact your program or the Education Abroad Office.
